He is the primary author of “The Challenge of Democracy: American Government in Global Politics,” the textbook used in their class. Janda, professor emeritus at Northwestern University in Chicago, explained his process of researching and writing, as well as discussed the main concepts, values and themes of the textbook and the course with students.
The class, taught by social studies teacher David Herring, uses the 11th edition of the textbook; the 12th edition will come out at the end of the year following the national elections. As one of Orono High School’s College in the Schools offerings, students taking the class can earn four semester credits from the University of Minnesota. This year, undergraduate credits at the U of M cost $463.85, so students and their families save more than $1,855 while experiencing accredited, Big Ten University coursework. The credits earned transfer to the U of M or other colleges.
