Calvin Presbyterian Church of Orono is delighted to honor charter member, Mabel Norton, as she turns 100 years old on Oct. 1.
Norton was an active contributing church member starting in 1957 working tirelessly both behind the scenes or in educational roles. Norton assisted in the nursery, a Sunday school teacher, church school superintendent, an ordained elder since 1971, circle leader, greeter, usher, financial secretary and custodian. She also served at funerals and wedding receptions, helped with Vacation Bible School and was part of the prayer chain of the church.
Norton was born in Iowa to a family of nine children and remained close to her nine sisters throughout the years. When one of her sisters came to visit, Norton and her sister washed all the church windows. This overwhelming task was done well, and unknown to any other church members at the time.
Norton enjoyed watering the flowers around the church. She also willingly painted an open brick wall in the Calvin Church sanctuary. As cooking and baking activities were enjoyed by Norton, it was her delight to cook turkeys for the Loaves and Fishes program once a month, and also to bake cookies for the Long Lake Bank Christmas Open House.
Her famous candied fruit cookies were well known at Calvin Church fellowship opportunities. Norton was honored for her many areas of service by the congregation with the Calvin Woman of the Year Award, and a rocking chair was donated to the nursery in her name.
It was at a church meeting that Mabel Norton met Vic Norton and cupid worked its magic for love at first sight. They were married and bought a home overlooking Lake Minnetonka. Throughout the years, on pleasant summer evenings, they would boat to Lord Fletchers restaurant for dinner, an activity enjoyed for many years even after the home was sold. After Vic Norton died in 1996, Mabel Norton sold their home and moved into Presbyterian Homes Minnetonka Shores (PHM) where she still resides.
Still active at age 100, Mabel Norton enjoys Bingo, and many other senior’s activities. She has been on planning committees and has been instrumental in making changes and improvements for PHM.
Mabel Norton’s strong faith in God with a daily thankful prayer life, have and continue to strengthen her. She is thankful for her many life’s blessing. To help this amazing woman celebrate, cards may be sent to Calvin Presbyterian Church at 177 Glendale Drive, Long Lake, 55356. The whole congregation congratulates Mabel Norton on this monumental accomplishment of reaching 100 and wish her the best.
