Hawkettes kick off new season

The Mound Westonka Hawkettes Dance team kicked off the 2016-2017 season on a high note Nov. 19 at the Delano Invitational held at Delano High School. Eleven teams competed for top honors.

Teams competing in Delano included ACGC (Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City), Brooklyn Center, Delano, Foley, Holy Family, Hutchinson, Mayer Lutheran-Watertown, Mound Westonka, Rockford, Waconia and Wilmar. Competition began with the varsity jazz teams, followed by JV jazz. After a break, the contest continued with varsity high kick and JV high kick.

Dancing to “Rise Up”, Westonka”s Hawkettes captured first place in JV jazz with three points. The Rockford Rockets got six points during their performance to “Breath of Life” and ranked second. Third place went to the Delano Tigers dancing to “One in a Million.”

Only first place was awarded for JV jazz, that honor going to Mayer Lutheran-Watertown Crusaders. Dancing to “Me Too,” they were given four points.

Honors went again to the Hawkettes after dancing to “Dance Party” during the varsity high kick challenge. Their point total was four. In second place with five points was Hutchinson”s Showstoppers dance team, which danced to “Bring “Em Out.” The Waconia Lakettes, performing to “Prince and the King,” earned third place with nine points. JV high kick was won by Hutchinson, with three points for their dance to “Salute.”

Repeat participants in the Minnesota State High School League Dance Team State Competition, The Mound Westonka Hawkettes are coached by Molly Carlson, Emily Gibson, Lexie Warlof and Ashley Woytcke. Team captains are Kali Anderson, Ariel Crawford and Lauren Meier.

The Mound Westonka Hawkettes Dance Team traveled to Hutchinson on Saturday Dec. 3, facing several Wright County Conference teams at the Hutchinson Showstoppers’ Invitational. With some fierce competition, the Hawkettes still managed to walk away with a clean sweep.

Mound Westonka’s varsity jazz team placed first with the best possible rank points (3), against Waconia (second place with a rank point of 6), Hutchinson (third place with a rank point of 10), Belle Plaine (fourth place with rank point of 13) and Delano (fifth with a rank point of 14).

The Hawkettes’ varsity kick team had an electric performance of their “Dance Party” routine, also placing first with a rank point of 3. Hutchinson placed second with a rank point of 6, Waconia took third with 10 rank points, Belle Plaine placed fourth with a rank point of 11, and Delano placed fifth with a rank point of 15. Glencoe Silver Lake and Litchfield also competed in the high kick category.

The Hawkettes’ junior varsity jazz team made their debut at Hutchinson, performing to “Keeping Your Head Up.” They also placed first (with a rank point of 4) against JV teams from Waconia, Hutchinson, Delano and Belle Plaine. The JV Hawkettes are led by senior captains Grace Hofstad, Sarah Neve and Maddie Roehrig.

This weekend the Hawkettes travel to Eastview for one of the largest invitationals in the state, facing off against 16 of Minnesota’s top AA dance teams. They perform at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon on Dec. 10 at Eastview High School in Apple Valley.
