Filing to be a candidate for School Board in Westonka District 277 will open on Tuesday, Aug. 1 and close on Tuesday, Aug. 15. Three school board members will be elected for four-year terms in the school district general election scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 7. On the same day there will be a special election to fill the remaining two years of one term.
Any eligible person may become a candidate for school board by filing an affidavit of candidacy and paying a $2 filing fee. Filing will be open in the office of the School Board Clerk (district administrative offices) 5901 Sunnyfield Rd., Minnetrista, during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, during the filing period. On the last day of filing, Tuesday, Aug. 15, the office will remain open until 5 p.m. Candidate information packets and copies of the Affidavit of Candidacy are available at the district administrative offices.
A candidate for the office of school board must be an eligible voter in the district, must be 21 years of age or more on assuming office Jan. 1, 2018, must have been a resident of the school district from which the candidate seeks election for 30 days before the general election and must have no other affidavit on file for any other office at the same election. Candidates must also indicate if they are filing for the general election (one of the four-year terms) or the special election (the two-year term).
The school board seats coming up for the general election this fall are currently held by Loren Davis, Gina Smith and Gary Wollner. The special election will fill the remaining two years of the term of former school board member Ann Bremer who passed away in February. That seat is currently held by Heidi Marty by interim appointment.
