Golfers enjoy ideal day in Maple Plain

“It couldn’t be a more perfect day to play golf!” That was the sentiment echoed by Kristi Anderson at the shotgun start of the 2017 Jander Classic Golf Tournament on Aug. 4 at Pioneer Creek Golf Course in Maple Plain. Kristi is the mother of Jake Anderson and organizer of the tournament that bears his name. The annual event was sponsored by the Give 60 for #60 Foundation, in partnership with the family and friends of Jake Anderson, which raises funds for scholarships and leadership programs for Orono High School and lacrosse programs across Minnesota.

The scramble-style tournament brought together 180 participants, made up of friends, teammates and members of the wider community who came to celebrate Jake and support the foundation. A silent auction, awards and dinner were provided in addition to a fun, relaxed round of golf. Music provided by DJ Joey Delaney, an Orono High School graduate, capped off the night.

“We’re so grateful to the community for their support,” said Bill and Kristi Anderson, Jake’s parents. “The spirit of this event and the enthusiasm of everyone who comes out to play does so much to advance the goals of the foundation. It’s important to us to be able to offer programs that are meaningful to student athletes and to recognize these remarkable kids who, like Jake, are leaders for their teams, their schools and for whom giving back to their community is a priority.”

This year the event welcomed several new sponsors, including the Whitney Sleep Center and DiMax Corporation, who joined repeat sponsors Clive’s Roadhouse Restaurant, Birch’s on the Lake Brewhouse and Supper Club, International Feed, Country Cake Cupboard, True Value Navarre, Ambient Photos, Thrivent, Justice Bros., Your Boat Club and Edward Jones.

“We couldn’t put on a tournament of this size without the supportive partnerships we have with these local businesses,” said Kristi. “We are especially grateful to the good people of Pioneer Creek Golf Course for their generosity. We’re honored that they welcomed us back this year!”

The Jander Classic is an initiative of the Give 60 for #60 Foundation, established to teach, motivate and inspire student athletes while celebrating the life of Jake Anderson. The event supports the activities of the Jake Anderson Legacy Fund, which awards scholarships to high school lacrosse players, and the Jake Anderson Leadership Symposium for high school students and the community. The foundation honors the 2013 Orono High School graduate, who died in 2013, and recognizes the core values that have become a part of his legacy as well as the mission of the Give 60 for #60 Foundation: sportsmanship, service to the greater community, leadership and kindness.
