School Board – ORONO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 278 CONDENSED MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION HELD ON JUNE 5, 2017

The regular meeting of the Board of Education of Orono Independent School District No. 278 was held on Monday, June 5, 2017 and called to order by board chairman Bob Tunheim at 7:02 p.m.

Present: Bob Tunheim, Dick Lewis, Mike Bash, John Morstad, Martha Van de Ven, Sarah Borchers, Laura Wallander, Karen Orcutt

UPON MOTION by Sarah Borchers, seconded by Dick Lewis, the consent agenda was approved as follows:

– Approved the minutes from the Regular Meeting on May 8, 2017

– Approved the assignment of Robert Von Kaenel III, as full time teacher at Orono Middle School, effective August 24, 2017.

– Approved the assignment of Kristin Rasmussen, as full time teacher at Orono Middle School, effective August 24, 2017.

– Approved the assignment of Erin Head, .75 FTE English Language Learner Teacher, as .2 FTE ATPPS Peer Evaluator at Orono Schools, effective beginning August 28, 2017.

– Approved the assignment of Ellie Ostvig, as classroom paraeducator at Orono Intermediate School, effective May 18, 2017 through June 8, 2017

– Approved the assignment of Natalie Mille, as classroom paraeducator at Orono Schumann Elementary School, effective beginning September 5, 2017.

– Approved the resignation of Daniel McCarthy, as special education paraeducator at Orono Middle School, effective beginning September 5, 2017

– Approved the resignation due to retirement of Rick Watkins, full-time network specialist at Orono Public Schools, effective July 15, 2017.

– Approved the assignment of Lauren Syrup, as Controller at Orono Public Schools, effective beginning June 19, 2017.

– Accepted donations totaling $9,100.28

– Approved the April 2017 Treasurers Report

– Approved the April 2017 Electronic Fund Transfers

– Approved District 287 Agreement for Tuition Contributions to Alternative Learning Programs

– Approved the individual contracts as follows:

1. Director of Community Education

2. Coordinator of Facilities & Safety

3. Administrative Assistant to Business Services

4. Child Nutrition Specialist

5. CE – Marketing & Program Coordinator

6. CE – Youth & Sports Program Coordinator

7. District Controller

8. Executive Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent

– Awarded the bid for Varsity Baseball Field Improvements

– Approved bill vouchers 199196-199461, EP register 8005444-8005460, control pay advance vouchers 3, 4546-4574.

8A. Indoor Activity Center Plan Approval (Action)

The Indoor Activities Center Plan was presented by Vaughn Dirks for approval.

UPON MOTION by Martha Van de Ven, seconded by Sarah Borchers, the board approved the design plan for the Indoor Activities Center as presented.

Motion carried.

8B. Policy 723: Uniform Grant Guidance Policy Regarding Federal Revenue Second Reading (Action)

Policy 723: Uniform Grant Guidance Policy Regarding Federal Revenue Sources was presented for a second reading and approval.

UPON MOTION by Mike Bash, seconded by Sarah Borchers, the board approved Policy 723: Uniform Grant Guidance Policy Regarding Federal Revenue Sources.

Motion carried.

9. – New Business

9A. Curriculum Adoption Report (Action)

Aaron Ruhland, Director of Learning and Accountability and Paul Hamilton, Assessment for Learning & ATTPS Teacher Leader presented the Curriculum Adoption Report and recommendations from the Mathematics Curriculum Committee on the 2017-2018 math adoption and implementation.

UPON MOTION by Dick Lewis, seconded by Mike Bash, the board approved the mathematics textbooks, technology and resource recommendations as presented.

Motion carried.

9B. Long Term Facilities Revenue for Intermediate District 287 (Action Roll Call Vote)

UPON MOTION by Mike Bash, seconded by Martha Van de Ven, the board approved the Long Term Facilities Revenue for Intermediate District 287 and waived the full reading.

The following voted in favor thereof:

Laura Wallander, Mike Bash, Martha Van de Ven, Bob Tunheim, Dick Lewis, Sarah Borchers

And the following voted against the same: None.

Motion carried.

9C. Resolution Discontinuing or Reducing Positions (Action Roll Call Vote)

UPON MOTION by Martha Van de Ven, seconded by Sarah Borchers, the board approved the resolution discontinuing or reducing positions and waived the reading.

The following voted in favor there of:

Laura Wallander, Mike Bash, Martha Van de Ven, Bob Tunheim, Dick Lewis and Sarah Borchers.

And the following voted against the same: None.

Motion carried.

9D. Other New Business as Necessary

None.

The Orono School Board will have a Special Meeting on Monday, June 26, 2017 at 5:00 pm in the District Office Assembly Room for Approval of Individual Employment Contracts and the Annual Board Evaluation of the Superintendent. The Board will be entering a closed session pursuant to Minnesota State Statute 13D.05, subdivision 3(a).

The 2017 Orono School Board Retreat will be on Friday, August 11, 2017 in the District Office

Assembly Room.

The next regular meeting is Monday, August 21, 2017 at 7:00 PM in the District Office Assembly Room.

UPON MOTION by Sarah Borchers, seconded by Dick Lewis the meeting was adjourned at 9:06 pm.
