Spartan boys push forward after last year’s heartbreak

The Orono men’s soccer team kicked off the 2017 season on Aug. 24 with a bang, travelling south to face Mankato West.

The team took the field with a vengeance, after losing five seniors to graduation and suffering a heart breaking loss to Willmar in a double-overtime shootout barn burner in the 2016 section final game.
Rain fell as the team was announced with some new faces, including goalkeeper Alex Danielson, but the skies quickly cleared and a rainbow formed over the field as it became evident that the odds were in Orono’s favor.

Dominating possession from the start, Orono captains Spencer Overturf, Christian Babo and Guy Mohs worked their offensive magic and set the stage for a fast paced passing game. A few minutes in, junior Sam Bazil sent a pass to Overturf who buried it in the back of the net to make the score 1-0.

Not long after, Mohs and some fancy footwork set up goals two and three from Overturf and junior Liam LaBelle.

Shortly into the second half, junior midfielder Ozzie Ramsey scored on a bar-down long distance blast from 30 yards out making the score 4-0.

Christian Babo would add his own rocket shot goal to the mix and Overturf netted two additional goals bringing his total to four.

Orono drilled the Mankato West keeper again and again late in the game, but some impressive saves on his part held the score at 7-0.

Solid defense by seniors Kevin Cornelius and Cole Wetterstrom, sophomore Nick Overturf and freshman Jamie Bazil helped earn the shutout, along with some top notch goalkeeping by Orono’s Alex Danielson.

Next up, Orono will host the DeLaSalle Tigers in their home opener Tuesday Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.
