Orono Women’s soccer played three home games this week and earned victories in each of the matches. Starting with DeLaSalle, the Spartans came away with a 3-0 win and then moved on to Glencoe Silver Lake with a 4-0 final score. Finally, they hosted Rochester Lourdes in which they compiled six goals with a final score of 6-1. The last game of the week marked the achievement of Coach Murray’s 200th career win.
The action went back and forth for the first 20 minutes, with both teams creating scoring opportunities.
Goalie Clare Gagne and the Spartan defense held strong in disrupting the multiple DeLaSalle crosses.
The Spartans started the scoring when a cross from the left was unable to be cleared and Paige Krasnoff found an open Anna Hughes, who finished in the right corner.
The scoring continued when Holly Harrison received a ball from Sarah Johnston and struck a hard left footed shot that found the top corner.
Earning her second goal of the night with five minutes remaining, Holly Harrison collected the ball off an Orono corner kick that she finished from the left side. Harrison’s teammates voted her Spartan of the Match.
Vs. Glencoe-Silver Lake
On Thursday, Aug. 31 the Spartans hosted Glencoe-Silver Lake.
The Spartans took immediate control of the match and notched over 10 shots within the first 10 minutes of the game.
The first score came when senior Lauren Hansen scored her first goal of the season.
Several shots later, Paige Krasnoff found Holly Harrison, who fired with her left into the top right corner.
Notching her second goal of the night and again with the assist from Krasnoff, Lauren Hansen won the ball in the box and finished.
Sophomores Sadie Koltes and Reiley Prueter combined for the final score when the corner taken by Reiley found Sadie in the air, who headed the ball into the lower corner.
Hansen was voted Spartan of the Match.
Vs. Rochester Lourdes
With clear sunny skies at Pesonen Stadium on Friday afternoon, the Orono Spartans hosted Rochester Lourdes.
The Spartans applied early pressure from the beginning of the game and started the scoring when Holly Harrison connected with Anna Hughes within the first five minutes.
Hughes followed up with another goal seven minutes later when Sadie Koltes served a through ball that Hughes placed into the left corner.
After a flurry of activity in the Orono goal box and multiple shot deflections, Rochester Lourdes scored their only goal of the game.
Megan Marzolf scored the next two goals for the Spartans off of assists from Hughes.
Sarah Johnston scored the fifth goal from a pass from Harrison.
Lauren Hansen finished the scoring with a pass from Sarah Johnston in the box.
Hughes was voted Spartan of the Match.
The completion of the game marked Coach Erin Murray achieving her 200th career win.
It was a fun week of soccer,” Coach Murray said. “Everyone got good playing time and contributed to our wins. The team stepped up in scoring thirteen goals in three games. We have a big week ahead of us and I like the way the team is playing.”
